What Can Go in a Roll-Off Dumpster in Illinois? (Allowed & Prohibited Items)

By Dumpster Rescue LLC — Bartlett, IL · Serving DuPage, Kane & Cook Counties

Quick Answer

What can go in a roll-off dumpster in Illinois?

Most household junk, furniture, appliances, yard waste, and construction debris are allowed. Hazardous materials — tires, batteries, liquid paint, motor oil, propane tanks, and asbestos — are prohibited by Illinois law and cannot go in any roll-off dumpster.

What IS Allowed in a Dumpster

The following items are accepted in standard roll-off dumpsters in Illinois:

  • Household furniture (sofas, chairs, tables, bed frames)
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Appliances (most — see refrigerant note below)
  • Clothing and textiles
  • Yard waste and landscaping debris
  • Wood, lumber, and pallets
  • Drywall and insulation
  • Flooring (carpet, tile, hardwood)
  • Cabinets, countertops, and fixtures
  • Windows and doors
  • Roofing shingles (subject to weight limits)
  • Concrete and masonry (small quantities; heavy debris surcharge applies)
  • General household junk and cleanout debris

What Is NOT Allowed in a Dumpster

These items are banned from Illinois landfills or require special handling. Placing them in a dumpster can result in extra disposal fees or hauler refusal:

  • Tires (banned from Illinois landfills)
  • Car batteries and lithium-ion batteries
  • Liquid paint and stain (dried empty cans are OK)
  • Motor oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze
  • Propane tanks and gas cylinders
  • Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers
  • Asbestos-containing materials
  • Medical or biohazardous waste
  • Electronics with mercury (fluorescent bulbs, some TVs)
  • Refrigerants / Freon-containing appliances (must be evacuated first)
  • Radioactive materials

Items That Need Special Handling

Refrigerators & Air Conditioners

These contain refrigerants (Freon) that must be evacuated by an EPA-certified technician before disposal. Once certified as refrigerant-free, the appliance can go in a dumpster. Many appliance removal companies handle this as part of the service — ask before booking.

Concrete, Brick & Heavy Debris

Allowed, but heavy materials are subject to weight limits. Most roll-offs have a 1–3 ton standard weight allowance. Excess weight triggers overage fees. For large concrete jobs, request a dedicated heavy-debris dumpster or book a concrete-specific haul.

Roofing Shingles

Allowed but very heavy. A full square of shingles weighs 200–350 lbs. Fill a 15-yard dumpster with shingles and you'll blow through the weight limit fast. Many roofers use a dedicated shingle dumpster or rent smaller containers and swap them out.

Electronics

Illinois bans most electronics from landfills under the Consumer Electronics Recycling Act. TVs, computers, monitors, and printers must go to an e-waste recycler. Small electronics like phones and tablets should also be recycled. DuPage County has a permanent e-waste drop-off in Wheaton.

Paint

Liquid paint is hazardous waste — not allowed. Latex paint can be dried out (leave the lid off, add cat litter to speed it up) and the dried empty cans are fine in a dumpster. Oil-based paint must go to a household hazardous waste event. DuPage and Cook County both run periodic HHW collection days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put appliances in a roll-off dumpster in Illinois?

Most appliances are allowed — washers, dryers, dishwashers, stoves. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners contain refrigerants that must be removed by a certified technician before disposal.

Can I put tires in a dumpster in Illinois?

No. Illinois prohibits tires in landfills. Tires must be taken to a tire recycler or an authorized tire drop-off. Most dumpster haulers will refuse to accept them.

Can I throw paint cans in a dumpster?

Liquid paint is prohibited — it is considered hazardous waste. Completely dried, empty paint cans are generally acceptable. Latex paint can be dried out by leaving the lid off. Oil-based paint must go to a household hazardous waste drop-off.

What construction debris can go in a dumpster?

Most construction debris is acceptable: drywall, lumber, flooring, tile, cabinets, insulation, windows, and doors. Heavy materials like concrete, brick, and roofing shingles can go in a dumpster but are subject to weight limits.
