How to Prepare for a Junk Removal Crew: 8 Steps for a Faster Pickup

By Dumpster Rescue LLC — Bartlett, IL · Serving DuPage, Kane & Cook Counties

Quick Answer

Do I need to do anything before the junk removal crew arrives?

You don't need to move anything heavy — that's the crew's job. But sorting keep vs. go, removing hazardous materials, clearing a walking path, and confirming driveway access will make the job significantly faster and prevent miscommunication on the day.

1

Decide what stays and what goes — before the crew arrives

The single biggest cause of a slow cleanout is indecision on the day of the job. Walk the space the night before and physically mark or separate items you're keeping. Anything left unmarked will likely get loaded. If you have multiple family members with opinions, settle those disagreements in advance — not while the crew is standing there.

2

Remove hazardous items yourself

Junk removal trucks and dumpsters cannot legally accept paint, motor oil, batteries, propane tanks, pesticides, herbicides, or other hazardous materials under Illinois law. Pull these out before the crew arrives and set them aside for a household hazardous waste drop-off. DuPage County has a permanent HHW facility in Naperville. Cook County runs periodic collection events.

3

Clear a walking path to large items

You don't need to move anything heavy — that's the crew's job. But if there's a narrow hallway blocked by boxes, or a staircase with items on every step, clearing a path before they arrive saves significant time. The faster the crew can move, the less time you're billed for.

4

Make sure the driveway or parking is clear

Junk removal trucks need roughly 25–35 feet of clear driveway or street space to park and load. If your driveway is blocked by vehicles, park them on the street. If street parking is tight, let us know when you book and we'll plan accordingly.

5

Confirm access to all areas being cleared

If items are in a locked garage, storage unit, basement, or behind a gate, have those areas unlocked and accessible before the crew arrives. Last-minute searches for keys add time. If a neighbor needs to move their car or a gate code is required, have that information ready.

6

Set aside donation items separately

If you have items in good condition that you'd like donated rather than landfilled, set them apart and let the crew know. Our crews sort for donation at the truck, but a clearly separated pile speeds that process up and ensures nothing intended for donation gets mixed with debris.

7

Disconnect appliances from power and water

Washers, dryers, dishwashers, and refrigerators should be unplugged and disconnected from water lines before the crew arrives. Hot tubs must have their electrical disconnected by a licensed electrician before we remove them — we'll remind you of this when you book a hot tub removal.

8

Have someone on-site who can make decisions

The crew needs a point person who can answer questions and confirm what goes. If you can't be there, designate someone you trust with authority to make those calls. Remote authorization over the phone can work for clear, straightforward jobs — let us know your situation when you book.

What you do NOT need to do

  • Move items to the curb or garage — we go room to room
  • Disassemble furniture — we handle it in place
  • Rent a truck or trailer — we bring ours
  • Sort recycling from trash — we sort at the truck
  • Be physically present the whole time — just be available by phone

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to move items before the junk removal crew arrives?

No. A full-service junk removal crew loads everything from wherever it sits. Clearing a walking path and separating keep vs. go items will speed up the job, but you don't need to carry anything to the curb.

Should I sort items before junk removal?

Yes. Sorting what stays vs. what goes before the crew arrives prevents hesitation and miscommunication on the day. Tag or physically separate items you're keeping — anything not marked tends to get loaded.

What should I do with hazardous items before junk removal?

Remove paint, batteries, motor oil, propane tanks, and pesticides before the crew arrives. These are prohibited under Illinois law. Take them to a household hazardous waste drop-off — DuPage and Cook County both run collection events.
