How to Get Rid of Old Furniture in Chicagoland

Getting rid of furniture in the Chicagoland suburbs isn't as simple as dragging it to the curb. Most municipalities have strict bulk pickup rules, donation centers are picky about what they accept, and Craigslist buyers ghost you. Here are your actual options, ranked by speed and cost.

Option 1: Hire a junk removal service (fastest)

This is the path of least resistance. You call, a crew shows up — often the same day — and they carry your furniture out of whatever room it's in. Basement? No problem. Third floor? They handle it. You don't lift a finger.

Option 2: Donate your furniture (free, but slow)

Chicagoland donation options for furniture: Salvation Army (free pickup, schedule 1-2 weeks out), Habitat for Humanity ReStore (accepts furniture in good condition, DuPage and Kane locations), St. Vincent de Paul, and local churches. Most require you to move items to the front door or driveway.

What they won't take: mattresses (almost universally rejected), particle board furniture (IKEA flat-pack), upholstered items with stains or pet damage, and anything broken. If your furniture falls in this category, junk removal is your realistic option.

Option 3: Rent a dumpster (best for large cleanouts)

If you have a houseful of furniture to remove — not just one couch — a dumpster rental is often more economical than junk removal. A 10-yard container holds the furniture from 2-3 rooms. You load it at your own pace over 7 days.

The tradeoff: you do the lifting. Heavy dressers, sofas, and mattresses need to go over the container walls (most have a swing-open door that helps). If you can handle the physical work, a $350 dumpster is cheaper than a $450+ junk removal fee for the same volume.

Option 4: Municipal bulk pickup

Most DuPage and Kane County municipalities offer bulk waste pickup on a scheduled basis. You call your village's public works department, request a pickup date, and place items at the curb.

The cost is typically $25–$75 per pickup depending on your municipality. The downside: scheduling can take 1-4 weeks, items must be at the curb (not inside your house), and there are usually limits on the number of items per pickup.

Check your village's website or call public works. Bartlett, Streamwood, Carol Stream, and Hanover Park all offer this service with different schedules and pricing.

Option 5: Sell online

Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, and Nextdoor are all options for selling furniture that still has value. The reality: mid-range furniture sells slowly (weeks), buyer no-shows are common, and you may need to arrange delivery or help loading.

Best for: high-value pieces (solid wood tables, leather sofas, antiques). Not practical for: worn everyday furniture, mattresses, particle board items, or anything you need gone quickly.

Option 6: Self-haul to the transfer station

If you have a pickup truck or trailer, you can haul furniture directly to a transfer station. DuPage County has facilities in Warrenville and Carol Stream. Kane County has facilities in Geneva and West Dundee. Expect to pay $30–$80 per load depending on weight.

The math: if you have one truckload of furniture, self-hauling costs $30–$80 plus your time and gas. If you have 3+ loads, a dumpster rental at $350 is usually cheaper and saves multiple trips.
